That Which Cannot Be Possessed
This study is taken from the Greek Myth of Jason and the Golden Fleece. This scene depicts the never-sleeping dragon tasked with guarding the Golden Fleece in the land of Colchis (modern day Georgia). The shape of the Golden Fleece is actually the outline of the country of Ukraine and the shape of the orange sky is Russia. The dragon is guarding the Golden Fleece but is losing his footing as he hisses at the sky and starts to slide down a hill. Vegetation and root systems, in various stages of life (the old oak which the fleece hangs on, the spry tree on the right, and the young seedlings in the foreground) represent the different generations of people who are being ‘uprooted’ from their country and are either fighting to defend it, or forced to flee.
